A surprisingly inspiring ad campaign

Charlie Siem, violin virtuoso

It requires a lot of discipline if you want to get anywhere. You have to be aware of your strengths, and of your weaknesses. And you have to hone in on those weaknesses every day.

Playing the violin is so technical. Obviously it's not about winning, but in a way it's quite similar to the psychological game a tennis player has with his opponent. Even if you're technically the best player in your grade while you're training, when you get out there, under the pressure, it's just about whether you've got a strong psyche and if you can keep it together.

If you're playing a challenging piece of music, you have to stay completely calm to overcome all the obstacles. It's more than just being great in the practice room. You have to translate the ability to the stage, by having a watertight mind. You can't have any self-doubt; you have to have incredibly positive thinking when you get out there, because there's always an element of risk.

It's inevitable that things go wrong in live performances, but mistakes are just things that you overcome - they're not a big issue. Being prepared mentally can see you through anything, because then your mind is in a place where it can take full advantage of your capabilities. And that applies to more than just playing the violin. It's about how you respond to everything...
